It was a wonderful surprise to hear that a short film project that I was involved with has received two 2012 Telly Awards — one for Nature/Wildlife and the other for Cinematography. I was writer/producer for the short film “For The Birds,” brought on the project by Director of Photography Jeff Deponte. The other team member was Salina Storozuk, who was the field audio engineer and editor.

The film was done for Hawaiian Airlines’ in-flight entertainment service. It is about Jack Jeffrey, a remarkable bird photographer and scientist who was a driving force behind the formation of the U.S. Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge on the Big Island of Hawaii. The film was about Jack’s passion for “the birds,” and showcased his skill as a photographer.

The “Telly” awards are the “Oscars” for the folks who produce videos for television and other smaller-format distribution services, including the Web. Suffice it to say for folks in video, winning a Telly is a big deal. Winning two is over the top.
